We had a wonderful official grand opening party at our South Orange location at Eden Marketplace. We had people come from all over the Northern New Jersey to attend the event. We created a special cake to commemorate the history and beautiful architecture of South Orange along with the many people who have risked their lives for our protection; The South Fire Station and Fearless Firefighters Cake. We thought it would be appropriate, seeing that next weekend is Memorial day and this year will mark the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.
When Amy and I went to the firehouse to get a few pictures last month, we were brought on an amazing tour of the firehouse. We were able to see everything from the fire engine & truck, to historical pictures and even the area where the firemen work day to day. The South Orange fire house is rich in history. The fire house that we made was created using a copy of the real architectural top view plan of the original building.
After touring the building, each of the firemen available that day allowed me to take their pictures. We used their photos to recreate them out of gumpaste. Our sculptors spent days working on these figures to get them to really look like the firefighters’ faces. We really felt that it was important to have the firemen larger than the scale of the building because they are what makes the building become alive.
The fire house was very time consuming because of it’s various tudor details and design. The design is characteristic of many of the South Orange tudors homes; peaked slate roof, brown brick construction, details around the trim of each window and arched doorways. It wasn’t exactly a cakewalk to build. All the angles and proportions had to be figured out and measured to get an accurate building model. What was ironic is that as we presented our cake model, one could glance out the window in the background and see the actual building down the street.
It was exciting to see the firefighters view themselves and their co-workers on our cake. They were able to recognize each and every person on their team. They even drove to event in style; on their fire engine.
Along with presenting this special cake design, we served the public complimentary samples of 3 different signature cake flavors- Chocolate Bananas Foster, Raspberry Red Velvet and Coco Limoncello. We also gave out sweet table samples of mini italian profiteroles, black raspberry french macarons, lychee and pomegranate jellies, and russian tea cakes. It was our pleasure to present our creations to the community this past weekend.
